Artist's Statement

I am a native Georgian, and a plein-air artist. Most weeks for the past 3 years family business has found me traveling I75 from Ringgold to Adel which has given me the opportunity to paint Georgia from one end to the other. I keep an easel, canvases, oil and acrylic paints, mosquito spray, and a cooler in the Jeep. Although I have a studio in both ends of the state, my real studio seems to be wherever I stop and see a scene I wish to try to capture in paint. The resulting en plein air paintings give me a sense of place in an otherwise hectic lifestyle.
Sandra Babb

Sandra Babb was born in 1946 in Ringgold, GA. She has always loved to draw. Art classes were scarce in public schools that were attended. Sandra's father gave her the opportunity to take the Art Instruction School correspondence course during high school. She received a BFA in Graphic Design in 1982 from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

While raising a family of three, Sandra did freelance work for schools and church programs, especially the Media Center. She designed and sewed banners for church worship services.

As a result of encouragement from a parent and after presenting a program in a public school on projects children could do at home with objects around the house in lieu of watching TV, Sandra began teaching private art classes to children. Soon adult painting classes were added to the weekly schedule.

Family business has called Sandra away from the classroom setting.

The opportunity to paint outside daily is now a reality. After taking some workshops with L. Diane Johnson she is always striving to see new landscapes as well as familiar territory with "new eyes".

Sandra, her daughter, son-in-law and an employee started a small gallery Old Green Eyes Art Gallery in Ringgold, GA. The goal of the OGE Art Gallery is to let local beginning artists have a place to show. This has been a wonderful experience and Sandra was proud when one young man had his first show there. This gallery is also a virtual gallery and may be viewed at www.sandrababb.com Sandra is available to do commissions of subjects from beloved relatives to old barns. She works in acrylics, oils, watercolors and pastels.

In 2002 Carol Shoemaker and Sandra Babb published a book that Carol wrote and Sandra illustrated. The children's book titled Cute As A Button can be viewed on Sandra's homepage sandrababb.com.

Sandra is currently a member of Civic Arts League and Regional Arts Alliance in Chattanooga. She is a member of Southern Artist League in Valdosta. Recently she has been accepted into Southern Ladies Art Conference.
